Automatic grouping via "open link in new tab"
If you could have an option which would turn a feature similar to this on that would be dope.
My idea was that any links that you choose to open in a new tab would go into a group which that tab already existed in or create a new group for that tab. I then thought it if you could turn that tab into a drop down (select box) which would contain all the other tabs in that group that would make having multiple groups open at once possible.
Maybe it could be possible to define a default group name for each bookmark.
A bookmark, that has set this default group name, will be opened in that group.

Oh i also have a general group. So if i put * in the group then a tab that doesnt match any of the auto parameters of the other groups gets added to that one. Right now im manually moving it. Would love for it auto.
i just downloaded firefox 4 beta today and am lovign panorama but this is the one thing im missing. i was hoping for this feature with a twist. A SMART version. :)
like to a group in the panorama window i could add a domain tag "neocodex" and all sites with domain neocodex will open in that tab group. or i could add a title tag "neo" anything with the word neo in the title (ie: neocodex, neopets, etc) would open in that one group. Or meta keywords tag for a group like "email" and all email links get auto opened group.
About focusing the tab. If via the options the user had checked to enable "When I open a link in a new tab, switch to it immediately".
THEN: If the user did not have ctrl down and was clicking on multiple links it should go focus that new tab right away. If they were ctrl+clicking it should wait for them to release ctrl and then should take the focus to the first clicked tab.
What do you guys think? :)
The manual method of opening into an existing group would be cool too but usually i ctrl+click OR middle mouse click a link(s) to open a new tab.

Perhaps left clicking new tab button opens in current group and middle clicking opens new tab in new group

I support this idea, I think "Open in a New Tab" should just be left as it is with the default action of opening in the current Tab Group. Add "Open in a Tab Group" with drop down of available tab groups. This way we don't introduce one additional click for those who always open in the current Tab Group
Oh probably in the group name 1 and group name 2. Above that an option for ungrouped? And by default clicking the "open link in new tab" without going into submenu will open it into the current group that set of tabs is in.
I think this is a great idea. I made an image of what i think it would look like:
So if they just click "Open link in new tab", it opens it unsorted? (or maybe in the current group the tabs at top are in right now)
And group name 1, and gropu name 2 are existing groups.
Devesh, we are thinking of the same thing.
i am not sure if i understood your idea well but if you meant something like tabs which have groups rather than a single webpage then i love that idea.
So if you mean something like that with which you don't have to zoom out and select a group rather the whole group is in one tab .. then gr8 ... even i came here to suggest that exact same idea and saw your suggestion ..
but if your idea is something else plz do inform me so that i can put his up.
I hope this could be also done in a way Tab Kit does it with its 'Group tabs from here to current' or 'Create new group from consecutive tabs' features in which, as the names suggest, it will create new group out of the current and all the tabs between it and (including) the selected one.
That way a user could quickly select multiple tabs and create a new group out of them without first going to the group view and with less mouse usage.

Sure, it would be helpful to include this option in the context menu for a particular link.
EVEN BETTER: A full-fledged context-menu like this:
Open URL As Tab In New Group
Open URL As Tab In Existing Group...
* Work Research... etc. (These entries are the names of the currently existing groups, displayed in a submenu of the "Open In Existing Group" option)
* Add Tab To Saved Group (...to add the tab to a group that's been saved to disk, but isn't currently shown on the desktop)
alternativly you could have firefox recognise the type of sites u save in your groups, then either prompt to or automaticly switch a new tab to the appropriate group.
so we are in the "shopping" group, i cant be arsed to switch groups to "communications" group, so i open Facebook in the one im already in. Firefox recognizes this and then moves the new tab to the communications group automaticly.
This is a great idea. Pages often open PDF's, Images, etc. with target="_blank". This opens a new tab, which is nice, but it would be great if this new tab was still considered a child of the parent page that called it, or at the very least, give the user the option to open in "child tab".
I can't believe this hasn't been though up before. Great idea Hat!
